In Paris, Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) left behind his successful career as a caricaturist and began life as an independent artist. At first, his pictures were populated by grotesque, wild, travesty-like figures inspired by Parisian street scenes. A little later he found his way to the typical themes that made him world famous. Rarely has Feininger's artistic development from his early works to his late works been shown in such a virtuoso manner in the USA.
