Picasso. Women in his life / A tribute / Markus Müller
It is commonly believed that Picasso's work received a stylistic impetus with each new muse in his life. However, it is not his vita or style phases that are the subject, but the individual fates of the women who shaped him. Personalities such as Françoise Gilot or Dora Maar, among others, are honored with their entire life and work and not just with the years spent at Picasso's side.
The book sketches the lives of ten women in the life of the Spanish artist. His mother, whose maiden name Picasso chose as his stage name, warned that he would be married to painting for life when he wanted to marry the Russian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova. The couple separated in 1935 – the reason was the young muse Marie-Thérèse Walter, who was also soon dethroned by Dora Maar. Because of separations, women like the young artist Françoise Gilot disappeared from Picasso's canvas, but not from life. A tribute is paid to all of them in this book.
