Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983) is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Whether it is a sign or a colour, Miró creates a poetic universe populated by metamorphoses. He was attracted to all forms of poetry and saw in dreams the expression of deep impulses that he sought to translate into artistic form, a happy juxtaposition of the real and the unreal. The artist's life, spanning seven decades, is traced here in a sophisticated catalog edited under the direction of Jean-Louis Prat, curator of the exhibition and director of the Fondation Maeght from 1969 to 2004, who was friends with the artist. More than 150 reproductions of paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures, as well as mostly unpublished photographs, show a technical and stylistic career marked by constant innovations (expressionism, detailism, surrealism, wilderness...). An anthology of prose texts by the poets with whom the artist collaborated throughout his life, Louis Aragon, Tristan Tzara, Max Jacob, René Char and Jacques Dupin, accompanies this visual journey.
The catalog thus makes visible (again) the immense and varied work of Joan Miró, a painter who was involved in all the important issues of the 20th century.
