Andy Warhol's series of screenprints of Marilyn Monroe immediately followed her suicide in August 1962. Warhol's statement on the subject linked Marilyn to the origins of his Death and Disaster series of paintings when he said, "I guess it was the big plane crash picture that Newspaper front page: 129 DIE. I also painted the Marilyns. I realized that all I was doing had to be death." All of his photosilkscreens and silkscreens are based on the same source image, a promotional photograph of Marilyn Monroe for her 1953 film Niagara.
