Poster / Photo Robert Capa / Pablo Picasso with his wife Francoise Gilot and his nephew / Golfe-Juan, France, 1948 / 50 x 70 cm
During an assignment in southern France in the summer of 1948, Robert Capa, who had met Picasso's partner Francoise Gilot in Paris a few years earlier, spent some time with the couple and their children on the Côte d'Azur. "Capa was a friend, so it wasn't formal at all," says Gilot of the photos Capa took of them during that time. They show the artist playing in the sand with his son on the beach or dutifully carrying an umbrella over Gilot's head. The tender portraits Capa captured show Picasso as a barefoot, carefree father enjoying life's simple pleasures: a side of the artist rarely seen. Capa's images capture not only a great artist but also a family man and have become some of the most memorable images ever taken by Picasso.
