"The girl in front of the mirror" was painted in March 1932. Created in the style Picasso was using at the time, it evokes an image of vanity as had been used in art of earlier periods, although Picasso shifts the focus and creates a very different take on the image. The work is viewed in terms of eroticism in Picasso's art, and critics from different eras have given their assessments of the work to reveal a wide range of responses.

The young girl is called Marie Therese Walter and was painted several times by Picasso in the 1930s.

"The Girl in Front of the Mirror" was painted during Picasso's Cubism period. Picasso was an artist who was very bold in his works. Even with backgrounds that usually only serve as a backdrop and are intended to support the main subject. He incorporates them into the painting to make them as intense as the main focus of the picture.

Picasso was part of a movement that came to be known as Modernism, a name that encompasses a range of different artistic styles and aesthetic responses. The term modernism is applied retrospectively to certain literary and artistic currents at the beginning of the twentieth century. The disjointed sense of time, the departure from the conventions of realism, and the adoption of complex new forms and styles in the Modernist era were undertaken to convey new meanings, illuminate the world in different ways, and reveal different relationships within the observed world. Modernism rejected the traditions that existed in the 19th century and tried to push the boundaries.
